Ocean Therapy
“Water is to me, I confess, a phenomenon which continually awakens new feelings of wonder as often as I view it.”
– Michael Faraday
Since ancient times in India, Ayurveda used the water element to balance the body and to create physical harmony. Water is one element that has a soothing effect on our mind and brings clarity to our thoughts.
Many people are drawn towards the sea or a beach when they are sad or are depressed. During this time they prefer to be by themselves just sitting by the sea and watching it. The sound of the waves hitting the shore or just the sound of flowing water helps in settling oneself into a composed state of mind. Slowly, from barely observing the surroundings many find themselves being able to introspect their lives and at times helps them to solve their problems or reach conclusions that they could have never thought about before.
Sitting by the sea helps to connect to one’s inner self and increases concentration. Those suffering from depression can improve their condition if they go towards the ocean at least once a week even if it is only for half an hour. The breathing pattern gets altered to deep breathing, which is very significant for those suffering from depression or related illnesses.
Looking at the horizon from the shore makes one feel like they are connected to the infinite universe and are one with it. It leads to one feeling that there are wide possibilities and to keep persevering towards them. For some even if someone is accompanying them as they walk towards the sea they automatically tend to become silent and contemplative.
Gazing at the sea induces a meditative state among individuals which is why some may even start meditating near the sea side. Many find that their mind becomes clutter free and easy to concentrate and focus and come up with creative ideas and solutions. The blue colour of the ocean is a calming colour and calms not just the body but even the mind. The ocean is a natural anti-depressant.
The ocean has been benefiting the human race since generations and many are yet discovering its beneficial effects for themselves. It is essential that we do not abuse this natural anti-depressant that forms a part of the life of many. We are the ones that can beautify it and save it for the coming generations. Scientists are studying the beneficial effects of the ocean on the human mind, yet its beauty is quite difficult to comprehend. We may never be able to describe this magical and beautiful experience and what is the science behind it and that is a secret that will always remain.
“For whatever we lose (like you or me). It’s always ourselves we find in the sea”
– E.E. Cummings
